The Muslim Veil The veil worn by many Muslim women tends to be a stereotyped piece of clothing. Many of us in the United States see it and automatically assume that the person is a terrorist, but what do we really know about the Muslim veil? Caryle Murphy, a writer for The Christian Science Monitor, thinks that we do not fully understand the complexity of the Muslim veil. In ââ¬Å"Behind the Veil: Why Islamââ¬â¢s Most Visible Symbol Is Spreading,â⬠Murphy writes that ââ¬Å"Rarely in human history has a piece of cloth been assigned so many roles. Been embroiled in so much controversy. Been so misjudged, misunderstood, and manipulatedâ⬠(1). We in the United States need to understand that the veil is a piece of cloth that has different meanings to different women in the Muslim world, rather than the single meaning we tend to ascribe to it. We must understand that although the veil can be used as a tool to oppress women in some cases, many women choose to wear the veil as a sign of faith and to express their freedom of religion. S. , voluntarily opt to wear the head scarf out of religious commitmentâ⬠and ââ¬Å"reject suggestions that their head covering means they have less autonomy at home or on the jobâ⬠(2). These Muslim women feel they are closer to Allah when wearing their veil and feel that they are showing pride in their faith. Although many women choose to wear the veil, where a woman lives often determines whether the choice is hers to make. In some Muslim patriarchal societies there can be a lot of pressure to wear a veil. Murphy tells us that ââ¬Å"there is family pressure from fathers, husbands, or brothers who want their female relatives to be seen by society as a ââ¬Ëgood girlââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëgood womanââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (2). A growing number of female Muslim scholars believe this is due to the fact that most interpretations of the Koran have been done by men. Murphy quotes Asma Barlas, a scholar of the Koran, who says that ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ëhistorically only male scholars have read the Koranâ⬠¦always within patriarchiesââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (3). Just as interpretations of the Koran differ, not all Muslim countries agree that women must veil themselves. Murphy refers to a recent petition by conservatives in Kuwait to bar two elected women from the National Assembly because they do not wear a head scarf. Kuwaitââ¬â¢s highest court ruled in the womenââ¬â¢s favor, stating that the ââ¬Å"constitution guarantees gender equality and freedom of choice in religionâ⬠(3). Because the values Kuwaitââ¬â¢s court upheld are so similar to Western values, it would seem that Westerners might champion a womanââ¬â¢s decision to wear a veil as a matter of freedom of religion. However, this has not always been the case. In fact, some Western countries see danger in the veil rather than a woman exercising her freedom of religious choice. The danger some Western countries see in the veil has to do with concerns about security in public places, but also reflects cultural insecurity on the part of some Westerners. The veil is thought to be a security risk because it prevents people like police officers and airline workers from identifying the person under the veil (in the case of the burqa). However, the real concern Murphy points out is cultural. She writes that ââ¬Å"in Western culture [â⬠¦] masks usually denote deceit or something to hideâ⬠and that the veil can prevent Muslim women from assimilating into a Western community where ââ¬Å"high stock is placed on face-to-face communicationâ⬠(4). British Minister Jack Straw brought up this concern when he called the veil a ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ëvisible statement of separation and differenceââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (4). France banned the wearing of the head scarf by state school children in 2004, though it decided against banning the burqa throughout the country. The Great Hero Luke Skywalker Essay Joseph Campbellââ¬â¢s perception of a heroââ¬â¢s journey begins with a primary series of steps called the Adventure of the Hero. Many narrative heroes use all or many of these steps. One particular character is Luke Skywalker from Star Wars. In his journey to become a Jedi he goes through these initial stages. Luke Skywalker lives with his Aunt and Uncle on a farm. Luke wants to be a pilot but his uncle has been holding him back from joining the academy so that Luke can help out on the farm. In order to get enough hands to compensate for Lukeââ¬â¢s departure they must purchase droids to work on the farm. This is where he meets R2-D2, a droid that the family purchases from some space creatures called the Jowas. R2-D2 contains a message from a women name Princess Leia. In the message, she is addressing a man named Obi-wan Kenobi. Luke figures that she means Ben Kenobi who is an old man that lives on Lukeââ¬â¢s planet. Luke decides that he will go later to look for Ben and figure out what the message is about. At this moment, the first step of Campbellââ¬â¢s journey of a hero takes place, called the Call to Adventure. Here, Luke is faced with the choice of whether to join Ben Kenobi on his quest to save Princess Leia or stay on the farm to help his uncle. Luke has never been anywhere else but his farm. He has no knowledge of the outside would and by leaving his farm he would be heading into the unknown. Knowing this, Luke declines Benââ¬â¢s offer. This is where the next step takes place called, Refusal of Call. Luke turns down Benââ¬â¢s proposal because he is unfamiliar with the outside world and he is needed by his uncle on the farm. The next step in Campbellââ¬â¢s journey of a hero is called Supernatural Aid. The supernatural aid is clearly Ben Kenobi. Ben was once part of a group called the Jedi Masters who are known to be able to use the mystical power called the Force. They can use this power to see things without their eyes, move objects and even control peopleââ¬â¢s minds. Ben demonstrates this when they are stopped by Imperial Soldiers. In order to get past them he targets the leader of them and controls his mind. Another aspect of this step is a giving of a gift or relic from the supernatural character to the hero. In this case, it is the light saber. The Jedi Masters are known for using light sabers which are a beam like sword that can cut through almost anything. This light saber will aid Luke on the rest of his journey. The next step that is supposed to happen is called Crossing the Threshold. Unfortunately, when Luke returns home he discovers that his family has been murdered. He decides to go back to Ben and join him on his quest. He has no obligations now and he is quite curious about the outside world and who Princess Leia is. Melissa was more than my neighbor. She was more than my mentor. She was my best friend. Melissa lived three houses down from me when I moved into a new neighborhood. She made moving to a new neighborhood a lot easier. She was one of those people who was friends with everybody. She was friends with everyone because she was so special. She was always in a good mood, always had something pleasant to say, and no matter what was going on, she could get you to smile. Melissa was a few years older than me but we were both young. I was in the fifth grade and she was in junior high when we met. She was tall for her age and practically towered over me. She almost always kept her long golden hair pulled back into a pony tail because she was a bit of a tomboy and liked to be athletic. But when she let it down and it waved in the gentle breeze, there was no doubt she was a girl. Her facial features were very soft, yet if you met her once, you would never forget her name. She also had the deepest green eyes that would sparkle so bright when she flashed her pearly white teeth, she would light up an entire room. Everywhere she was, there would be laughter, smiles and happiness spreading out like some sort of delightful virus. She would listen to you. She would be your friend, even if she just met you. I can not remember a time when she had something unpleasant to say about someone. That was one of many valuable lessons I learned from her and have made apart of my life.
